The Emerson model DR-352 is
a most unusual and attractive set made in 1940 at a list price of
$32.95. Several Emersons with Ingraham cabinets shared the unique
grill treatment seen here which was not a grill at all, but a curved
surface which covered the speaker opening. Vents on each side and
along the bottom allowed the sound to emerge. I would assume this
approach served to absorb the high frequencies, giving the radio a
mellow tone, considered a desirable feature at the time. The
cabinet design also adopted the "waterfall" design that was
popular in the furniture of the day but, in this case, the water
"flows" upwards, rather than down. |
