RCA Model 9TX5 "Little Nipper"

RCA Model 9TX5

This is the RCA model 9TX5 from 1939, part of a series of radios they called "Little Nippers".  There were only two Catalins in the series.  RCA advertised this one as having a "Brazilian green onyx finish".  It was also made with a white case (now yellow) and maroon knobs.

Without exception, the marbleization in the green examples is absolutely incredible.  There are areas that are almost clear, which allow swirling within the depths of the material to be seen.  This gives a three-dimensional effect and the illusion of thickness that is far greater than it really is.  It is a small set, just a bit more than 8 inches in width, and the styling is unabashedly Art Deco.

The 5-tube chassis sported all metal tubes when it was made.  The same chassis found its way into Bakelite, Plaskon, and wood cabinets, with list prices starting at $9.95 for Bakelite, $12.95 for wood, and topping out at $17.95 for the Catalin versions.
